So what does clean actually smell like?

Here’s the bit nobody tells you. That “fresh laundry” smell is mostly added fragrance, made to hang around on your clothes long after the wash. It’s not what clean smells like. It’s what perfume smells like.

Clean smells like nothing. Which sounds boring until you try it.

Why we left it out

When our youngest kids both had rashes at the same time, we started paying attention to everything that touched their skin, including what we washed their clothes in. We wanted a detergent with only what’s needed to clean. Nothing extra.

So no fragrance, and no “fresh scent” covering anything up. The clean comes from the surfactants and enzymes, not fragrance.

But does it get rid of stink?

Yes. Our sheets have four enzymes, including protease and lipase, which help break down the proteins and oils in sweat and body grime. So sports kits and gym gear come out actually clean, not just perfumed over.

On your sheets, towels or pillowcases. Just clean.

Still love a scent? Easy

Get that fresh smell your way

Hang it in the sunshine. Nothing beats it, and it’s free. The sun helps keep whites bright too.

Scent a wool dryer ball. A couple of drops of your favourite essential oil on the ball, not the clothes. You pick the smell instead of your detergent picking it for you.

Don’t let it sit. That musty smell usually comes from wet washing left in the machine. Get it out and hung up quickly.

Give your machine a clean. A hot empty cycle once a month keeps the drum and seals fresh, so your washing does too.
